The Penn State Abuse Scandal involving former Penn State defensive coordinator Gerald “Jerry” Sandusky and others began getting major media coverage last year. Sandusky was accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over more than a decade. He was sentenced to 30-to-60 years in prison on 45 counts of child sexual abuse charges. The excerpts from articles below describe the various allegations against Sandusky and accusations that not enough was done to stop him from continuing to commit these alleged crimes.
Penn State Abuse Scandal: A Guide And Timeline by Bill Chappell November 8, 2011
More than a week after former Penn State defensive coordinator Gerald “Jerry” Sandusky was charged with sexually abusing eight boys following a grand jury investigation, the police, Sandusky, the alleged victims, and another coach all have competing versions of the events that prompted the university to fire long-time coach Joe Paterno.
Penn State fired Paterno and president Graham Spanier on Nov. 9, four days after Sandusky was arrested. Athletic director Tim Curley and a vice president, Gary Schultz, are accused of perjury and failing to report suspected child abuse. Both have stepped down from their posts.
Sandusky and his attorney have maintained that he is innocent of the charges, with the former coaching assistant saying he merely “horsed around” with the boys.

Jerry Sandusky Rumored to Have Been ‘Pimping Out Young Boys to Rich Donors,’ Says Mark Madden by Michael Hurley on Thu, Nov 10, 2011
In April, Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden wrote a story revealing Penn State for much of the cover-up of Jerry Sandusky’s alleged child rape that has been exposed in the past week. While it didn’t raise many eyebrows back then, six months later it looks to be incredibly accurate.
On Thursday morning, just hours after legendary head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired by the school’s board of trustees, Madden was asked on WEEI’s The Dennis and Callahan Show what he believes the next piece of news will be.
What he said was twice as shocking as anything that’s been released thus far. “I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen,” Madden told John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. “I hear there’s a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation — and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can — that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak.”
Penn State: Would you do better than Joe Paterno? 10 November 2011
By Kate Dailey BBC News Magazine
…Conservative estimates published in the journal Science suggest that 5% to 10% of American boys have been sexually assaulted, as have 20% of girls. Some 90% of these cases are never reported.
These numbers have remained consistent for years. And the Penn State example helps demonstrate why. “We choose not to talk about it,” says Jolie Logan, chief executive of Darkness to Light, a non-profit group that trains adults to prevent abuse. “Who wants to think about people having sex with children? Because it’s not comfortable to talk about, we don’t.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15668834

Child sexual abuse (CSA) involving sexual contact between an (usually male) adult and a child has been reported by 20% of women and 5-10% of men worldwide (1-3). Surveys likely underestimate prevalence due to underreporting and memory failure (4-6). Although official reports have declined somewhat in the U.S. over the past decade (7), close to 90% of sexual abuse cases are never reported to the authorities (8).
CSA is associated with serious mental and physical health problems, substance abuse, victimization, and criminality in adulthood (9-12). Mental health problems include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide (13, 14). CSA may interfere with attachment, emotional regulation, and major stress response systems (15). CSA has been used as a weapon of war and genocide and is associated with abduction and human trafficking (2)….
Most CSA is committed by family members and individuals close to the child (1), which increases the likelihood of delayed disclosure (22), unsupportive reactions by caregivers and lack of intervention (8, 23) and possible memory failure (24, 25, cf. 26). http://dynamic.uoregon.edu/~jjf/articles/science05.htm

Ex-Coach Denies Charges Amid New Accusations
By MARK VIERA and JO BECKER November 14, 2011
…In a phone interview with Bob Costas that was broadcast Monday night on “Rock Center,” Sandusky said he was innocent of the charges against him and declared that he was not a pedophile. He did acknowledge, “I shouldn’t have showered with those kids.”
“I could say that I have done some of those things,” he said of the accusations against him. “I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.”
Asked whether he was sexually attracted to underage boys, he said “I enjoy young people, I love to be around them, but, no, I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.”
Jerry Sandusky says he’s innocent but admits contact with kids 11/14/11 Sporting News
Jerry Sandusky said Monday he is “innocent” of the sexual abuse charges against him, but he did not deny that he “horsed around,” showered with and touched boys while he was a Penn State assistant coach.
Meanwhile, police in Pennsylvania said Monday that at least 10 more alleged victims have come forward since Sandusky’s arrest earlier this month and that they are investigating their claims, The New York Times reported.

And their children and spouses could be required to attend “reunification therapy” sessions. Such loopholes have been closed in North Carolina and California and New York. But they still exist all over the country….

A judge who granted unsecured bail to former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky also donated money to the charity he founded. The charity is at the center of child sex-abuse charges against Sandusky.
District Judge Leslie Dutchcot gave money to The Second Mile in 2009 and volunteered for the group, according to annual reports and her web page. The charity’s 2009 annual report says Dutchcot and her husband donated between $500 and $999 to The Second Mile. Dutchcot didn’t immediately respond to a question about whether she’ll recuse herself from the case because of those past ties.

Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, got a 16-year- old client pregnant and later married her – Girl was seeking emancipation from her parents in 1996 BY Teri Thompson , Michael O’keeffe & Kevin Armstrong NEW YORK DAILY NEWS November 15 2011
Joe Amendola, the State College, Pa., attorney representing accused child molester Jerry Sandusky, has an interesting back story himself: He got a teen-age client pregnant during the mid-1990s. Amendola, 63, married the girl several years after the birth of their child, The Daily reported Monday night, citing documents filed at the Centre County, Pa., courthouse. Amendola represented a 16-year-old girl then known as Mary Iavasile when she filed an emancipation petition in September 1996….
The girl gave birth to Amendola’s child when she was 17 years old, her mother, Janet Iavasile, said. Amendola would have been about 49 years old at the time. The age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16.
The Citadel Faces Abuse Scandal Similar To Penn State’s November 15, 2011 by Mark Memmott
There’s a story unfolding in Charleston, S.C., that sounds depressingly similar to the scandal that has rocked Penn State University. Officials at The Citadel, “the military college of South Carolina,” are admitting they did not do enough after learning that a man in custody in Mount Pleasant, S.C., who has been accused of sexually abusing at least five boys in recent years, was brought to the school’s attention in 2007. Then, school officials were told, he had engaged in inappropriate sexual activities with boys during a summer camp at the college in 2002. An internal investigation was done, but police were never informed…..
Louis “Skip” ReVille, 32, a Citadel alum, is accused of sexually abusing boys he coached in Mount Pleasant. In 2007, as Charleston’s Post and Courier reports, Citadel officials were told by a suspected victim that five years earlier ReVille had invited him and other boys to a dorm room on campus. ReVille, the boy said, showed them pornography and encouraged them to masturbate. The boy was 14 years old at the time.
ReVille went on to become a school principal and coach in Mount Pleasant. Local WCSC-TV reports that investigators say he now has “confessed to charges he sexually molested teen boys, aged 13 to 15.”

Penn State coach Mike McQueary breaks silence 16 Nov 2011
Mike McQueary, the coach at Penn State who is said to have witnessed Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in a shower, has broken his silence, claiming that he did, in fact tell the police about what he saw. Mike McQueary’s comments, in an email made available to The Associated Press on Tuesday, appeared to add more confusion to a scandal that has enveloped the university and resulted in the firing of renowned head football coach Joe Paterno, the ousting of president Graham Spanier and charges of perjury against the athletic director and a senior vice president.
Penn State Scandal: Mother Of Alleged Jerry Sandusky Victim Claims Mistreatment By Son’s School – Ryan D. Buell 11/23/11
Court records refer to him simply, as Victim One. Outside of a four-and-a-half page section about him in the grand jury indictment of ex-Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, little else has been discussed about him publicly.
Last week, his mother (whom I will refer to as “Mother One”) removed him from Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, Pa., where he was a senior and an all-star athlete. In an interview conducted last week, she explained why she pulled him from the school.
“They were not helpful,” Mother One said of the school’s administrators. “They wanted me to go home and forget about it.”
Mother One also alleges that since the Sandusky scandal erupted, fellow students and the high school’s football coach (who also serves as assistant principal) have all targeted her son with verbal attacks and threats of violence.
She also claims that the school’s principal tried to convince her and her son not to report their allegations against Sandusky to the police, and that as recently as this month, refused to treat threats of violence against her son by other students as credible….
As the full story emerged, Victim One revealed that for nearly two years he was subjected to various sexual acts by Sandusky. Some had even occurred at the middle school and high school, where Sandusky had been given complete access to him by school officials.
On Nov. 7, Pennsylvania State Attorney General Linda Kelly praised Central Mountain High School for “doing the right thing” in the Sandusky matter. The indictment states that the school immediately called the police when it was informed of the abuse.
Alleged Victim In Sandusky Case Leaves High School Due To Bullying Laura Hibbard 11/21/11
The first known alleged victim in the Jerry Sandusky case, known as “Victim One” was forced to leave his school because of an onslaught of bullying, The Patriot-News reports.
Mike Gillum, psychologist for the family, told the news source that officials at Central Mountain High School didn’t step in and provide guidance to the boy’s classmates, who began to blame Joe Paterno’s firing on the 17-year-old. Victim One testified he was forced into multiple sex acts between 2006 and 2008. During that time, Sandusky was also assisting the high school with their varsity football program, the report states.
Gillum told The Patriot News that name-calling and verbal threats at the school, which is located about 30 miles northeast of Pennsylvania State University, became too much for the boy to bear.

Penn State Scandal: Mother of Sandusky’s Adopted Son Speaks Out By KEVIN DOLAK and JIM AVILA (@JimAvilaABC) Nov. 17, 2011
The birth mother of Jerry Sandusky’s youngest adopted child has come forward saying she believes the former Penn State coach led her son on a path of self-destruction and that she contacted authorities years ago about her son’s safety.
Debra Long told ABC News in an exclusive interview that sharing her now 33-year-old son Matt with Sandusky had been a nightmare after the coach became the boy’s guardian via foster care in 1995. Long says that she watched as her child became enamored with the local hero and then increasingly frightened by Sandusky’s behavior.

Exclusive: Jerry Sandusky interview prompts long-ago victims to contact lawyer November 17, 2011 SARA GANIM, The Patriot-News STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
Jerry Sandusky’s primetime television interview Monday led several potential victims to come forward and consider sharing their story, according to two State College attorneys. Hearing his voice and his words proclaiming no wrong — while admitting he showered innocently with young boys — was a trigger for some who say they were abused by the former Penn State defensive coordinator. One said it went back to the 1970s, around the time Sandusky founded the charity that prosecutors say was his axis for finding victims.

Neighboring county entangled in scandal By Curtis Tate — McClatchy Newspapers Nov 21, 2011
LOCK HAVEN — While most of the attention in the Penn State child sex abuse scandal has focused on State College, the impact extends farther north, where some of the alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky still live….
But from one end of the county to the other, everyone’s talking about what happened at Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, where Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, volunteered as a football coach for three years.
A 23-page report by a state grand jury investigating allegations that Sandusky molested at least eight boys over a 15-year period begins with “Victim 1.” Victim 1 testified that he met Sandusky as a participant in The Second Mile, a charity Sandusky founded in 1977 to help underprivileged and at-risk youth throughout Pennsylvania.
Victim 1, who was 11 or 12 when he first met Sandusky, testified that Sandusky cultivated a relationship with him, buying him gifts, taking him to restaurants and inviting him to sleep over in his basement….
“Victim 1 did not want to engage in sexual conduct with Sandusky and knew it was wrong,” the grand jury report said. Though this discomfort led Victim 1 to eventually break off contact with Sandusky, the report said, Sandusky persisted. An agent for the state Attorney General’s Office testified that there were 61 phone calls from Sandusky’s home phone to Victim 1’s home phone between January 2008 and July 2009.

New Sex Abuse Suit Claims Sandusky Threatened Boy’s Family If He Told By Colleen Curry ABC News 11/30/11
The latest person to accuse former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse also claims that Sandusky threatened to hurt the boy’s family if he ever told anyone about the abuse.Sandusky’s newest accuser, who is now 29, had not told anyone about the abuse until he read about the grand jury presentment charging Sandusky with 40 counts of child molestation over 15 years, his lawyer Jeff Anderson said today. Until that time, he had thought he was the only victim.
….Anderson said the boy met Sandusky through the Second Mile foundation when the alleged victim was 10, and was abused by Sandusky from 1992 to 1994. He said that Sandusky threatened to harm the boy’s family if the boy told anyone about the abuse. Sandusky also paid for sports camps, plied the boy with gifts, and took him on trips, Anderson said.
The lawyer said during a press conference today that they had filed suit against Sandusky, Penn State and the Second Mile charity seeking reparations for over 100 acts of sexual abuse.
Anderson alleged that Sandusky had abused the boy at Penn State University, at Second Mile events, at his home, at a Penn State bowl game out of state, and in Philadelphia.

Jerry Sandusky’s Wife Denies She Ignored Rapes By COLLEEN CURRY Dec. 8, 2011 Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky’s wife has denied allegations that her husband sexually abused boys in their home and that she ignored cries for help.
Sandusky was arrested Wednesday on 10 new counts of child sex abuse charges based on the testimony of two new alleged victims. The new allegations bring to 10 the number of alleged sex abuse victims. Dottie Sandusky, who delivered a $50,000 check today to help bail her husband out of jail, was named in the testimony of one of the new alleged victims.
Mrs. Sandusky has been implicated in the alleged sex abuse crimes by three of the men who claim to have been assaulted by her husband….

Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, previously told ABC News that at least one of the boys had denied that he was abused. Sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys over a 15-year period. A key allegation against the 67-year-old former coach was that he was seen raping a boy about the age of 10 in the showers in 2002.

Jerry Sandusky Was Part Of Child Porn Ring, Greg Bucceroni, Former ‘Child Prostitute’ Claims
09/20/2012
Jerry Sandusky was involved in a tri-state child porn ring and helped a now deceased youth football school coach arrange to have sex with a child prostitute, according to a newly released email….
The New York Daily News reports that on Monday, Greg Bucceroni, a self-described former child prostitute, sent an email to officials at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn.
In the message, Bucceroni said he was associated with a child sex ring that included Sandusky and former Poly Prep football coach Phil Foglietta. The email said that, in 1979, Bucceroni was originally expected to have sex with Sandusky, but, because of time constraints, he was introduced to Foglietta instead.
From the email:
Foglietta was introduced to us as Coach Phil who coached youth football in NYC. Foglietta agreed to pay $200.00 for child sex and followed us back to a Philadelphia hotel, myself (sic)ad another child prostitute then engaged coach Phil in child sex.”
Twelve alumni of Poly Prep have filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming they were raped and abused by Foglietta, the Wall Street Journal reports. The suit claims school officials knew about Foglietta’s crimes and covered them up, “continuing to publicly celebrate Mr. Foglietta as an upstanding member of the school.”

Jerry Sandusky sentence: 30 to 60 years for child sex abuse charges 10/9/12 Staff report Sporting News Jerry Sandusky has been sentenced to 30-to-60 years in prison on 45 counts of child sexual abuse charges, a judge announced on Tuesday.
The former Penn State assistant, and at one time presumed successor to Joe Paterno, will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. Three of Sandusky’s victims spoke in court Tuesday. While one victim said that he has “cried out to Jesus” for help in dealing with the scars Sandusky left on his life, another told Sandusky, “I will not forgive you.”
In a rambling address to court, Sandusky, 68, said: “We are going to smile through the pain. We’re going to laugh. We’re going to cry. Because that’s who we are.”
In June, Sandusky was convicted of molesting 10 boys over a 15-year period—a total of 45 charges. Witnesses said Sandusky used The Second Mile, a charity he founded to help disadvantaged children, as a recruiting ground for his victims. He showered them with gifts, brought them around the Penn State football program and welcomed them in his home.
Eventually, the kindness turned dark. Witnesses said he fondled them, took showers with them and raped them. Sandusky denied the allegations as he has done repeatedly, including on Monday in a recording released by the campus radio station….

A key witness in the child sex abuse trial of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim No. 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.
The case rocked one of the country’s most storied college sports programs and led to Sandusky’s conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse of several victims. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.
Ballantine Bantam Dell said “Silent No More: Victim No. 1’s Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky,” will come out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim’s mother and psychologist and “will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky’s actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse,” Ballantine said. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2012/0928/Sandusky-Victim-No.-1-to-reveal-his-identity-in-new-book
